Sesamoiditis

Sesamoids are two small bones found under the head of the first metatarsal. They lie within a tendon, and slide up and down as we walk. This is similar to the knee cap, which lies within the quadriceps tendon.

Symptoms include a vague pain under the big toe joint and pain on palpation/pressure applied. Sesamoiditis results from repetitive microtrauma to the region or increased load on the sesamoids caused by:

Treatment includes:

 Icing
 Reduce weight bearing activity
 Wear supportive footwear (Avoid Bare Feet)
 Padding
 Strapping
 Orthoses
